We have been or started Where the Red Fern Grows, this is so that students can compare and contrast, as well as see character development. One thing I have found very effective is if you ask the students at home how reading is going and even some comprehension questions about the reading. For example: What kind of characters are in the story? What are the main ideas or events in the story? etc...
